About the Role – Project Officer (Re-greening Africa Project)
ChildFund Kenya is seeking a passionate and experienced Project Officer to lead the implementation of the Re-greening Africa Phase II Project across Kiambu, Kajiado, and Makueni Counties. This role will be based in Emali, Makueni County.
As a Project Officer, you will play a key role in planning, executing, and reporting on environmental sustainability and climate resilience initiatives. You will work directly with communities, local partners, youth, government departments, and other stakeholders to enhance sustainable land use and build economic opportunities through reforestation, agroforestry, and carbon market initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Implementation & Management
- Lead the implementation of the Re-greening Africa project across Kiambu, Makueni, and Kajiado.
- Develop and execute a Detailed Implementation Plan (DIP) with clear timelines and cash flows.
- Oversee project activities including community mobilization, tree planting, climate education, and sustainable livelihood development.
- Promote green jobs for youth and women through agroforestry and environmental entrepreneurship.
- Establish and support agroforestry nurseries, kitchen gardens, and school-based Aflatoun climate clubs.
- Strengthen linkages to carbon markets for smallholder farmers and youth.
- Ensure compliance with donor and organizational standards in all project phases.
2. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting
- Lead project monitoring, surveys, and data collection.
- Document success stories, lessons learned, and impact reports.
- Develop and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual progress reports.
- Maintain up-to-date records and reports on platforms such as SharePoint.
3. Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination
- Build strong relationships with county and national government, NGOs, and other partners.
- Represent ChildFund Kenya in forums, stakeholder meetings, and donor visits.
- Organize learning sessions, review meetings, and knowledge-sharing events.
4. Resource Mobilization & Proposal Development
- Collaborate with the Grants Acquisition & Management (GAAM) team to develop new project proposals.
- Identify and cultivate relationships with strategic partners for joint programming and fundraising.
5. Child Safeguarding & Compliance
- Uphold ChildFund’s Child Safeguarding Policy and ensure safe environments for children.
- Integrate gender, protection, and safeguarding into project design and implementation.
- Establish feedback mechanisms and accountability systems for project participants.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, Agriculture, Agribusiness, Community Development, Project Management or related field.
- Certification in Project Management (e.g., PMP, CAPM) is an added advantage.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in implementing agroforestry, climate change adaptation, or rural development projects.
Key Competencies
- Strong project planning and implementation skills
- Knowledge of agroforestry, climate-smart agriculture, land restoration, and community resilience
- Experience working with youth and women’s groups on livelihoods or green jobs
- Ability to build partnerships and coordinate multi-stakeholder initiatives
- Excellent communication, report writing, and presentation skills
- Fluency in English (spoken and written)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data analysis tools
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
- Willingness to travel frequently and work in rural areas with minimal supervision
Desirable Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of carbon offset markets and environmental finance
- Experience with community-based targeting and participatory learning approaches
- Familiarity with safeguarding policies, child protection, and gender mainstreaming
- Ability to thrive in complex, rapidly changing environments
