The HumAngle Fellowship on Reporting Conflict and Missing Persons for Mid-Career and Senior Journalists in Nigeria (Fully Funded)

Applications are now open for the 2025 HumAngle Fellowship on Reporting Conflict and Missing Persons, organized by HumAngle in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
This fully funded 3-day fellowship will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, from November 4–6, 2025, with participants expected to arrive on November 3 and depart on November 7. The fellowship is designed for mid-career and senior journalists dedicated to advancing ethical, trauma-informed reporting on conflict and the issue of missing persons in Nigeria.
About the Fellowship
The HumAngle Fellowship seeks to strengthen the capacity of journalists covering complex human stories arising from Nigeria’s conflict zones. Through immersive training, fellows will explore how to approach sensitive reporting with empathy, precision, and ethical responsibility.
The program will admit 10 experienced journalists, who will participate in interactive sessions and workshops led by experts in conflict reporting, trauma, law, and psychosocial care.
Key Focus Areas
Participants will gain practical knowledge in:

Human-centred conflict reporting – Developing trauma-informed frameworks when interviewing vulnerable sources and crafting ethical narratives.

Understanding Nigeria’s missing persons crisis – Examining legal frameworks, interviewing families, and gathering verified information responsibly.

Psychosocial best practices – Safeguarding the mental well-being of both journalists and their sources.

Radicalism and extremism – Exploring the dynamics of violent extremism and its impact on communities and media narratives.
Eligibility Criteria
The fellowship is open to:

Mid-career and senior journalists based in Nigeria (from print, broadcast, or digital media).

Freelance reporters passionate about conflict and human rights storytelling are also welcome to apply.

Applicants must demonstrate commitment to ethical journalism, empathy in storytelling, and the ability to engage with sensitive topics.
HumAngle is particularly interested in journalists who:
