The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is inviting applications for the position of Writer & Copy Editor under the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme. This role provides a unique opportunity to contribute to global communications for sustainable and inclusive cities, working directly from UN-Habitat’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
About UN-Habitat
UN-Habitat is the United Nations agency responsible for human settlements. It promotes socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities, aiming to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and advance the New Urban Agenda adopted at Habitat III in 2016.
The position is housed within the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKI), which drives UN-Habitat’s global communications, partnerships, and outreach to promote sustainable urbanization worldwide.
About the Role: Writer & Copy Editor
The Writer & Copy Editor will collaborate closely with the Chief of Communication to produce high-quality written content that highlights UN-Habitat’s mission, initiatives, and impact. The role will support editorial planning, storytelling, and media promotion for flagship events such as the World Urban Forum (WUF), World Habitat Day, and World Cities Day.
This is a full-time, on-site volunteer assignment ideal for an experienced communications professional with exceptional editorial judgment and a passion for global development.
Key Responsibilities

Develop written materials including press releases, speeches, op-eds, newsletters, impact stories, and forewords for UN-Habitat publications

Lead coverage and promotion of major events such as the World Urban Forum and World Cities Day

Edit and review communications materials to ensure adherence to UN editorial standards and brand consistency

Rewrite and restructure documents to enhance clarity, tone, and flow

Provide capacity-building and editorial support to staff and partners
-
Maintain consistency in terminology and ensure accuracy and originality in all outputs

Serve as report writer for UN meetings or events held in Nairobi and abroad

Manage content production schedules and editorial workflows

Participate in knowledge-sharing initiatives and support UNV storytelling activities
Eligibility Criteria
Experience:
-
Minimum of five years of professional experience in writing, editing, or content development
-
Proven record of creative storytelling and editorial excellence
-
Experience in multicultural or multi-agency environments, preferably within the UN system or development organizations
-
Experience with urban development, sustainability, or related topics is highly desirable
Education:

Master’s degree in communications, journalism, media, storytelling, or related fields
Languages:

Fluency in English is essential
Nationality:

Open to nationals of countries other than Kenya
