Position: Consultant – SEEA (System of Environmental Economic Accounting) Ecosystem Accounting

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The consultant will support UNEP in the following activities:

Stakeholder Consultations: Work with Saudi Arabian agencies (MEWA, National Center for Vegetated Cover, National Center for Wildlife, GASTAT) to align and source relevant data. Compile and process global and national geospatial datasets for SEEA EA ecosystem accounts.

Develop Tier 1 SEEA EA Account: Covering the period 2013–2023.

Documentation: Prepare comprehensive documentation of data sources and applied methods.

Technical Reporting: Produce technical documentation and present findings to stakeholders.
Expected Deliverables

Extent Accounts – Based on IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology or national classification (including marine ecosystems such as the Red Sea).

Protected Areas Analysis
-
Species Accounts – For 5–10 key species.

Ecosystem Condition Measures – For 5–10 metrics (e.g., biodiversity intactness indicators).

Ecosystem Services (physical & monetary):
-
Agricultural biomass provisioning (up to 10 key crops)

Water supply services (groundwater)
-
Global climate regulation (carbon sequestration & storage)

Local climate regulation
-
Air filtration services (urban areas, 3–4 cities)

Nature-based tourism & recreation services

Ecosystem Monetary Asset Account
Qualifications and Skills
-
Advanced university degree in statistics, agricultural economics, political sciences, international studies, development, environmental sciences, or related fields.

A first-level degree plus two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.

Minimum 7 years of proven professional experience in government administration, UN system, NGOs, consultancy services, or similar organizations.

Demonstrated expertise in environmental-economic accounting and economic modelling.
-
Experience in organizing and implementing ecosystem assessment projects or related initiatives is highly desirable.
