IEBC Registers 875,501 New Voters in Just 10 Days of ECVR Exercise
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has recorded a massive turnout in the ongoing Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise, registering 875,501 new voters in the first ten days alone.
According to data released by the Commission on Thursday, the robust response underscores a significant public interest in participating in upcoming electoral processes. The ECVR exercise, which is designed to capture eligible citizens who have turned 18 or never registered before, has seen high activity across all 47 counties.
IEBC officials expressed satisfaction with the initial phase of the drive, noting that the daily average of over 87,000 new registrations surpasses initial projections. The Commission has deployed thousands of registration kits to various centers, including chief’s camps, markets, and mobile units in remote areas, to ensure accessibility for all eligible voters.
“We are encouraged by the civic enthusiasm being demonstrated by Kenyans. The numbers we are seeing within this short period indicate a growing desire to participate in the democratic process,” an IEBC spokesperson said. “Our goal remains to ensure no eligible citizen is left out of the voters’ roll.”
The Commission also reminded the public that the ECVR window remains open, urging those who have not yet registered to visit the nearest designated IEBC centre. In addition to new registrations, the exercise allows existing voters to check their details, transfer their polling stations, or replace lost or damaged voter cards.
Political analysts note that the surge in new voters could have significant implications for the country’s political landscape, as younger demographics increasingly seek to influence governance through the ballot box.
The IEBC has assured Kenyans that the process is secure, transparent, and free from manipulation, with all captured data being backed up in real-time to the national database. The Commission is expected to release a region-by-region breakdown of the new registrations in the coming days.
The current ECVR exercise is scheduled to continue, with the IEBC urging all eligible citizens to take advantage of the remaining time to register and secure their right to vote.
