Work-From-Home Arrangements Being Considered to Cushion Rising Fuel Prices

NAIROBI, Kenya

As Kenyan commuters and businesses grapple with record-high fuel prices following the latest EPRA price review, work-from-home arrangements are emerging as a potential strategy to help employees and organizations reduce transportation costs and mitigate the economic strain.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced a significant fuel price increase effective April 15 to May 14, 2026, with super petrol rising by approximately twenty-nine shillings per litre to over two hundred and six shillings in Nairobi. Diesel also jumped by a record forty shillings per litre to a similar price point. The hike has been driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, pushing crude oil prices higher.

In response, the government reduced Value Added Tax on petroleum products from sixteen percent to thirteen percent and deployed funds from the Petroleum Development Levy Fund for price stabilization. Despite these interventions, the price increase has triggered a ripple effect across the economy.

Public transport fares have already increased significantly. The Matatu Owners Association announced a nationwide fare adjustment, with urban commuters facing higher daily costs and long-distance routes seeing increases of several hundred shillings. Ride-hailing drivers have also reported reduced earnings as platform operators delay fare adjustments.

The Kenya Transporters Association highlighted that fuel accounts for about half of total operating costs for road freight, meaning the recent diesel price jump translates to a significant increase in overall transport expenses.

For organizations with roles that can be performed remotely, work-from-home arrangements offer several benefits including reduced commuting costs for employees who would otherwise travel daily, lower fuel consumption contributing to national conservation efforts, decreased operational expenses for businesses on office utilities, and improved employee retention during periods of economic strain. Kenyan employers are now exploring comparable measures that have been adopted in other countries facing similar fuel crises.

The opposition has called for government action beyond the temporary VAT reduction, demanding a special National Assembly sitting to review fuel pricing mechanisms. Transport unions and consumer groups are advocating for additional fuel subsidies and tax reviews. For individual employees and businesses, work-from-home arrangements present an immediate, actionable response to the fuel crisis. By reducing the frequency of daily commutes, workers can significantly lower their personal fuel expenditure while maintaining productivity.

Employers considering work-from-home policies are advised to assess which roles are suitable for remote work, establish clear communication and performance monitoring protocols, provide necessary digital tools and support for remote collaboration, consider hybrid models combining office and remote days, and develop clear policies on working hours, availability, and reporting.

The fuel price hike is expected to persist through the April to May pricing cycle, with potential for further increases depending on global oil market conditions. As the government continues to balance fiscal sustainability with consumer protection, work-from-home arrangements offer a practical coping mechanism for households and businesses navigating this challenging period.

For now, Kenyans are adapting to the new economic reality, with many hoping that remote work policies will become more widespread as a lasting buffer against fuel price volatility. Employees seeking work-from-home options are encouraged to engage their employers constructively, presenting clear proposals on how productivity and communication would be maintained under remote arrangements.
