About the Fellowship

The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship honors the memory of Elizabeth Neuffer, a Boston Globe correspondent and human rights reporter who dedicated her career to exploring complex social and political issues. The fellowship carries forward her legacy by empowering women journalists who share her commitment to human rights and social justice.

During the fellowship, the selected journalist will have the chance to complete research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies and participate in an internship with The Boston Globe. This combination of academic enrichment and practical journalism experience provides fellows with unique perspectives and valuable professional connections.

Note on New York Times Placement: In previous years, fellows spent time at The New York Times as writing fellows. As of 2027, fellows will no longer be placed at the Times. The IWMF and fellowship organizers are currently arranging the fellow’s placement for June to July 2027. Applicants should stay tuned for updates on this portion of the fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the 2027 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, applicants must meet all the following requirements:

Gender Identity

• Open to women, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming journalists

Professional Experience

• Must be a working journalist with at least three years of full-time, professional journalism experience

• Internships and journalism-related work completed as a university student do not count toward the three-year requirement

• Applicants may be affiliated with a media organization or work as freelance journalists

• Must speak, read, and write English fluently
