In this article, we look at the largest commercial banks in Kenya by asset base. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has licensed 39 commercial banks to operate in the country.
Commercial banks in Kenya are classified into three peer groups using a weighted composite index: large, medium, and small. This index comprises net assets, total deposits, capital and reserves, the number of deposit accounts, and the number of loan accounts.
A bank with a weighted composite index of 5 percent or above is classified as a large bank (Tier 1). A medium bank (Tier 2) has a weighted composite index between 1 percent and 5 percent, while a small bank (Tier 3) has a weighted composite index of less than 1 percent.
According to the 2024 Bank Supervision Annual Report from the Central Bank of Kenya, there are 9 large banks with a combined market share of 75.6 percent, 9 medium banks with a combined market share of 16.7 percent, and 21 small banks with a combined market share of 7.7 percent.
