Safaricom My OneApp 2026: Features, Migration, and What M-PESA Users Need to Know

Safaricom Merges M-PESA and MySafaricom into AI-Powered “Super App” My OneApp

Safaricom has officially begun migrating users from its standalone M-PESA app to a new unified platform, My OneApp, in a major consolidation move aimed at creating a single digital ecosystem for millions of users.

Launched during the Decode 4.0 summit in Nairobi, the AI-powered “super app” merges the functionalities of the M-PESA App and the MySafaricom App into one intelligent interface. The shift marks a significant strategic evolution for Kenya’s largest telecommunications company as it seeks to transition from a mobile network operator into a comprehensive technology firm.

“For the first time, customers can see their M-PESA balance, GSM balance, bills, bundles and financial services in one place,” said Safaricom Chief Financial Services Officer Esther Waititu during the launch. This consolidation is designed to eliminate the friction of switching between multiple applications to manage finances, purchase airtime, or access other digital services.

From Fragmentation to an Intelligent Ecosystem

Previously, Safaricom customers had to navigate between the dedicated M-PESA app for payments and the MySafaricom app for line management. This fragmented app strategy created silos for users and added engineering load for the company.

My OneApp solves this by acting as a “digital lifestyle ecosystem.” The platform currently hosts over 80 mini-applications and serves millions of active monthly users. It is currently available for Android devices, with an iOS release expected soon.

AI-Driven Personalization

The key differentiator of My OneApp is its use of artificial intelligence to learn user behavior. Unlike static interfaces, the app adapts based on transaction frequency, preferred contacts, recurring payments, and commonly used services.

“The more you use the app, the more it learns you,” Waititu explained. “It’s not just convergence, it’s personal.” Frequently accessed features—such as bill payments, investments, or lending options—automatically surface on the home screen. Future iterations aim for “agentic” functionality, where the app could eventually automate tasks like paying rent or ordering breakfast based on the user’s habits and real-time deals.

A Full Financial Services Suite

Beyond basic payments and bundles, My OneApp integrates Safaricom’s expanding financial services directly into the user journey. Key features include:

  • Ziidi & Ziidi Trader: Users can earn daily interest on their M-PESA wallet balance or buy shares in companies listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange starting with as little as one share.

  • Fuliza & Pochi la Biashara: Instant credit access and a dedicated wallet for micro-entrepreneurs to separate business income from personal spending.

  • Tunza Mapato: Insurance products covering devices and providing income protection.

  • Entertainment & Lifestyle: Access to gaming, news, Baze (entertainment), and third-party mini-app integrations.

Technical Overhaul and Competitive Strategy

Behind the new interface is a massive infrastructure upgrade. Safaricom rebuilt its financial core as a multi-tenant, AI-first platform capable of processing thousands of transactions per second, a significant leap from the roughly 100 transactions per second the system handled when M-PESA first launched.

The consolidation is also a defensive move against increasingly aggressive Kenyan banks, such as Equity Group Holdings and KCB Group, which have been improving their mobile apps to challenge M-PESA’s dominance in payments and savings. By merging its user base into a single “Super App,” Safaricom aims to reduce app switching, track user behavior more closely, and collect a “platform tax” as third-party services integrate with the ecosystem.

Migration Status and User Concerns

Since April 3, 2026, M-PESA app users have been receiving updates redirecting them to My OneApp. While the MySafaricom app remains active for now, the migration of the M-PESA user base is the first definitive step toward retiring the legacy apps.

However, the transition has sparked mixed reactions. Some users have expressed concerns regarding data safety and platform stability, citing past reports of unauthorized access involving mobile money applications. Safaricom has emphasized that the new app includes enhanced security features such as biometric authentication, in-app fraud reporting, and PIN recovery without requiring USSD or contact center support.

CEO Peter Ndegwa framed the launch as part of a broader vision: “We are no longer just a telco. We are becoming a technology company building the intelligent digital infrastructure that will power Kenya’s future.” The success of My OneApp will likely define Safaricom’s role in Kenya’s digital economy for the next decade, shifting the focus from simply providing access to fostering financial health and wealth creation.
